When it comes to going to the gym and exercising I am really lazy. Especially right now with the extra pounds from the pregnancy, I feel more tired than ever. I have been trying to exercise at least twice a week because the benefits are so much greater when you do it during the pregnancy. Besides being good for your health, according to the #1 pregnancy book “What to Expect When you are Expecting” research shows that babies of mothers who exercise during pregnancy score higher on average, in general intelligence tests by the age 5. Also, the book says that the recovery from giving birth can be faster, making it easier for you to get back in shape. Because insomnia is very common, exercising during pregnancy also helps a lot when you are trying to get a good night of sleep. Now, I’m not telling you to go run a marathon or lift a lot of weight, you have to talk to your doctor to find out what kind of exercise you can and can not do. Every woman is different. My training is super simple, I usually bike between 35-45 minutes on a stationary spinning bike at home. I try not to spin with a great amount of resistance but just enough to get a little sweat going. The important thing is to move your legs and not let the body temperature raise too much causing exhaustion. Drinking plenty of water before, during, and after your workout is important so you don’t become dehydrated. When I finish biking, I lift a little bit of weights with my arms. I only use a 2 lb weights on each arm. Walking is also a great choice of exercise because almost anyone can do it and it can be done throughout the entire pregnancy. As you know, I live in Wisconsin in the US, and the winter here is can be tough, so I much prefer exercising at home.
